Lucknow, January 2026: Ashok Leyland, India’s leading commercial vehicle maker and flagship of the Hinduja Group, has officially taken a major step into Uttar Pradesh’s electric vehicle ecosystem with the inauguration of its first electric bus manufacturing plant in Lucknow. The landmark facility marks a new chapter in clean mobility and positions Uttar Pradesh as a key manufacturing hub for the company’s future‑ready vehicles.
A ₹1,000 Crore Bet on Green Mobility
The new plant, spread over nearly 70 acres at Sarojini Nagar in Lucknow, is part of Ashok Leyland’s broader plan to invest up to ₹1,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh over the coming years. While the first phase — which has already begun operations — required around ₹252 crore, the total capex will scale as production capacity rises to meet demand.
Initially, the facility will manufacture electric buses with an annual capacity of 2,500 vehicles, with plans to increase this to *5,000 units per year in subsequent phases. These will include 17–18‑seater electric buses designed for school transport and inter‑city services, supporting India’s transition to cleaner transport.
Strengthening UP’s Industrial Ecosystem
The inauguration ceremony, held in early January 2026, was attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, underlining the political and economic significance of the project.
Officials and company leadership highlighted several key benefits:
-
Job creation: Around 1,000 direct jobs and 2,000+ indirect roles in logistics, support services and local MSMEs are expected as part of the plant’s ecosystem.
-
Skills development: A MoU with the state government will train 10,000 youth annually in EV manufacturing and related technologies, boosting employability in the region.
-
Advanced infrastructure: The plant features cutting‑edge manufacturing and digital technologies, designed to be future‑ready for electric, alternative fuel‑based and internal combustion platforms.
Pushing India’s EV Vision Forward
The Lucknow facility aligns with larger national priorities for sustainable transportation and net‑zero emission mobility. Leaders at the inauguration underscored how electric buses will reduce dependence on petroleum vehicles while supporting India’s transition to clean energy solutions.
Ashok Leyland Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja described the new plant as a milestone in the company’s global strategy, underlining ambitions to become a top‑tier commercial vehicle manufacturer worldwide while strengthening India’s manufacturing base.
A Win for Lucknow & Uttar Pradesh
For Uttar Pradesh, this marks a significant industrial milestone — enhancing the state’s manufacturing credentials, attracting eco‑focused investment, and creating valuable opportunities for both businesses and the workforce. The plant not only boosts local production capability but also helps position Lucknow as a future‑focused EV manufacturing hub in northern India.
